Snce joining RPIA this year, I have seen students positively adjust to challenging learning environments after taking on leadership roles.

Adjusting to the demands of the pandemic has required me to think through my pedagogical approaches in order to ensure that my students are learning in a way that is most beneficial during this challenging time. This has included shifting my focus to highlight the social and emotional well-being of students, and to pay more attention to relationship building with students as they learn new content in my class. Since joining RPIA this year, I have seen students positively adjust to challenging learning environments after taking on leadership roles. My first RPIA Action Plan, focused on students leading academic conversations and using accountable talking stems, has impacted the entire learning community in a good way. I am excited to see how this collaborative planning with other RPIA Teachers helps me implement more restorative practices in order to center my student leaders.

Our teacher gets it. She gets us. I feel like I can talk to her about how I’m feeling in class and she will work with me so that I can be successful in her class.
